How to get your License as a Teen in Texas

With Crossroad it's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Driver Education Course: Enroll in and complete a State-approved Teen driver education course. This typically includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training
    • Fill out a 30 Hour Log Sheet if you chose Parent Taught
    • Complete 14 hours of training with your driving school if you chose Instructor Taught
  2. Learner License: After completing the first 6 hours of your 24-hour course, you're eligible to schedule an appointment to pick up your learner license at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office.
  3. Driving Test: At this step complete your Texas Teen Impact Course. Once you've held your learner license for 6 Months, completed the 24 hour course and the Texas Teen Impact, schedule and pass a DPS approved road test.

Receiving your license

  • U.S. citizens have the option to submit their application online. Upon DPS approval, your license will be mailed directly to your address. Please ask for details
  • All other residency types must schedule an appointment with DMV to pick up their license. Feel free to ask us about how to get the earliest available date

What do I need for a Teen Road Test?

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Hold a valid learners license for 6 months
  • 24 Hour Teen Drivers Ed Course Completion certificate (will say "For Drivers License only" on top)
  • Texas Teen Impact Certificate (ITTD)
  • VOE (verification of enrollment)
  • Must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
  • 30 Hour Log Sheet (If parent taught)

The online course is $68.99. Seasonal sales and discounts may be available.

This varies from person to person. The Parent Course is the most cost effective option letting you fill out a 30 hour Log sheet with a guardian, however not all individuals may meet the requirements. Instructor taught is advised for guardians with busy schedules or who do not meet the requirements for Parent Taught. You can view requirements and more info here.

Your teen may start course at 14, they become eligible for a learners permit at 15 and can take the road Test at 16

You are eligible to take your road test at 16. The date on the back of your learners permit also indicates which date you may take your road test.

Bring your learner's permit, Impact certificate, VOE, 30 hour log sheet (For Parent taught) or 14 in class log sheet (For Instructor Taught), and DE-964 (will say for drivers license only on the top)
